Figurative Language is used to create a picture in the reader's mind. It gives more meaning than literal language.
- Explanation video of Figurative Language compared to Literal Language
- Similes - comparisons between two different objects, using like, as, or than (or more/most or comparing words that end in -er/-est)
- Metaphors - comparisons between two different objects, saying one thing is or was the other
- Idioms - phrases that mean something very different from what the words seem to say
- Personification - giving human characteristics or traits to nonliving objects
- Onomatopoeia - words that sound like what they mean
- Puns - using multiple meanings of words to create humor
- Verbal irony - when a speaker says something opposite of what they mean (related to sarcasm)
- Analogy - a comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification.
